Bangor Grammar School- lighting the way to lower energy costs
Bangor Grammar School (BGS), is a prestigious voluntary grammar school for boys in Bangor, County Down. Founded in 1856 it is one of eight Northern Irish schools represented on the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference.
In January 2013, after 11 years of planning and preparation, the School moved into its current newly-built building on Gransha Road, beginning a new era in its substantial history.
Bangor Grammar School today exists to provide best in modern grammar school education for the boys of the greater Bangor area.
The challenge
Bangor Grammar School had the dual objective of reducing energy and maintenance costs throughout the school. BGS had identified the potential to reduce their existing lighting with modern energy, efficient LED lighting.
Having reviewed potential partners for this project, BGS chose to engage with eEnergy as their lighting partner. This was due to their clear, concise detailed proposition, turnkey solution and no upfront cost light-as-a-service solution, backed up by glowing recommendations from current clients.
eEnergy had numerous challenges to overcome in a delivering the project in a complex environment. With school areas open all year round, installation had to be carefully coordinated with the onsite facilities management team to ensure timely access and minimal disruption to the college’s operations.
The solution
Having conducted an investment-grade audit of Bangor’s existing lighting, eEnergy’s lighting experts identified a proposed solution designed to provide BGS with a high-quality lighting system that delivered the maximum life-time savings and long-term benefits. This consisted of:
- A like-for-like replacement of 1800 light fittings
- High quality LED lighting from leading technology manufacturers
- Turnkey solution including design, installation and ongoing maintenance
- No upfront investment required. The light-as-a-service solution is self-funded as it’s paid for using the savings it generates. At the end of the agreement, BGS will benefit from 100% of the savings for the remaining life of the system.
Bangor Grammar School could be confident in the savings they would achieve. eEnergy’s survey and proposal used an industry-recognised process and mathematical formula to review the existing lighting installation, operating “burn hours” for each luminaire and the price of electricity currently being charged to establish an accurate savings forecast.
The installation was carried out over 2 months of Summer 2024 to minimise operational disruption for the school
eEnergy’s lighting specialists ensured that the design delivered more consistent, brighter lighting throughout the School. This has helped to provide a lighter, brighter teaching and learning environment for students and teachers.
eEnergy’s electrical installation partners and project management team worked hand in hand with the School’s facilities management team to ensure minimal interruption to day-to-day school activities.
Our service package guarantees the performance of the luminaires we install, which means that any failures (wholesale or partial) are replaced on-site rather than requiring you to return the equipment to the manufacturer. Our package is also backed by full replacement warranty for the term

- Year 1 gross saving: £37,118
- Reduction in lighting costs of 48%
